Push-to-Start Says Key Not Detected: What to Check Before You Buy a Fob

A dashboard message saying the key is not detected rarely means the key is dead. Work through the coin cell, the backup start position, the 12-volt battery and the antenna before paying for a replacement.

A dashboard message reading key not detected is alarming precisely because the key is sitting in your hand. The car appears to be denying something obviously true.

In practice this message rarely means the key has failed. It means the vehicle could not hear the key at the moment it looked, and there are several ordinary reasons for that — most of which cost a few dollars or nothing at all to resolve.

The expensive mistake is jumping straight to a replacement fob. First: get the car started right now

Your owner manual names the exact position for your model, and it is worth knowing before you need it. If one of these works, you have both started the car and learned something diagnostic: the key is intact and the transponder inside it is fine. What has failed is the fob's ability to broadcast at distance, which points squarely at the battery.

The five things to check, in order

1. The coin cell in the fob

This is the leading cause and the cheapest fix, so it goes first.

A proximity fob broadcasts continuously to be detected, and that draw exhausts a CR2032 or CR2025 coin cell in roughly two to four years. Crucially, it fails gradually. The pattern is nearly always the same: the fob stops working from across a car park, then only works within a few paces, then only at the door handle, then not at all.

Two practical notes. Buy a fresh cell from a retailer with turnover, because coin cells self-discharge on the shelf and a cheap multipack can arrive half depleted. And check the orientation when refitting, since the polarity marking is easy to reverse and a backwards cell reads exactly like a dead one.

2. The vehicle's own 12-volt battery

This one is under-diagnosed and worth taking seriously.

The antenna system that searches for your key runs off the vehicle's 12-volt supply. When that battery is weak, body electronics behave strangely before anything dramatic happens to starting, and intermittent key detection is a recognised symptom.

Suspect the vehicle battery if any of these are also true:

  • The engine has been cranking more slowly than usual
  • Other unrelated dashboard warnings have appeared
  • The car has been standing unused for several weeks
  • The problem is worse first thing in the morning or in cold weather

On a hybrid or electric vehicle this is easy to miss, because a healthy traction battery says nothing about the small 12-volt battery that runs the body electronics. That smaller battery is what powers key detection.

3. Where the fob is sitting

Free to test, and occasionally the whole answer.

Radio signals attenuate. A fob pressed against a phone, tucked inside a metal-lined wallet, buried in a bag with a laptop, or carried in a pocket alongside three other fobs can be dampened enough to fall below the detection threshold — particularly if the cell is already weakening.

Take the fob out on its own, hold it clear of everything, and retry. If it works, the fob is fine and the cell is probably marginal.

Location matters too. Underground car parks, sites near broadcast infrastructure, and areas with heavy radio traffic can produce interference that makes a healthy fob intermittent in one specific place and perfect everywhere else. If the fault only happens in one car park, that is the tell.

4. Whether the vehicle battery was recently disconnected

If the problem started immediately after a jump start, a battery replacement, or a workshop visit, this is almost certainly your cause.

Disconnecting the 12-volt supply can leave some body control modules requiring a relearn before they will recognise their stored keys again. The key is undamaged. What has been lost is the vehicle's side of the pairing.

5. The vehicle's antenna or receiver

Rarest of the five, and the only one that is genuinely a vehicle fault rather than a key fault.

Proximity systems use low-frequency antennas distributed around the cabin and door handles. If one fails, detection can become oddly location-specific — the key is seen in the driver seat but not the passenger seat, or works for door unlocking but not for starting.

The diagnostic that isolates this is a second known-good key. If a different fob shows exactly the same behaviour in the same spots, the fault is in the vehicle rather than in either key. That is the point at which the visit becomes a diagnostic one rather than a key-replacement one.

How a proximity system actually works

A short explanation makes every check above make sense, and makes it much harder for anyone to sell you the wrong repair.

A proximity key is not one radio system, it is two working together.

A low-frequency field, broadcast by antennas placed around the cabin, door handles and boot, asks is a key nearby? The fob hears that field and wakes up.

A higher-frequency reply from the fob answers with its credential, which the vehicle then checks against the keys it has stored.

The fob's coin cell powers that reply. This is why a flat cell produces exactly the symptom you are seeing: the vehicle is broadcasting normally, the key simply cannot answer.

It also explains the backup start position. Holding the fob against the start button or a marked spot on the column puts it inside a short-range coil that can energise the chip directly, the same way a bladed transponder key is read. No fob battery required — which is precisely why that method still works when nothing else does.

And it explains why the fault can be location-specific. If one low-frequency antenna has failed, the vehicle can hear the key in some seats and not others, or at the door but not at the start button. A key that behaves differently depending on where in the car it is points at the vehicle's antennas rather than at the key.

Call when one of these is true:

  • You have replaced the coin cell with a known-fresh one and the message persists
  • A second known-good key behaves identically, which points at the vehicle
  • The fault appeared immediately after battery work, meaning a relearn is likely
  • The backup start position does not work either, which suggests more than a flat cell
  • You have no working key at all, which is a different and more involved job

How long a visit takes

Anyone promising a fifteen-minute all-keys-lost proximity job is not describing the work that actually has to happen.
