Ram key replacement at a glance

Ram is the third-largest full-size truck brand behind Ford and Chevy per Cox Automotive sales data. Ram shares the FCA/Stellantis architecture with Jeep — same Sentry Key family, FOBIK on 2008-2017 trucks, HITAG-AES SmartKey + SGW on 2018+.

Typical pricing runs $200-$480 all-in. A 2015 Ram 1500 Big Horn FOBIK spare runs $215-$295; a 2024 Ram 1500 Limited proximity all-keys-lost runs $355-$480.

Like Jeep, 2018+ requires AutoAuth subscription or NASTF VSP credential for SGW authentication on all-keys-lost.

Why Ram keys are different

Ram inherits Stellantis architecture documented at TechAuthority. Pre-2018 trucks use SKREEM (1998-2007) or FOBIK (2008-2017). From 2018 onward Ram 1500 (DT platform) and HD 2500/3500 (DJ platform) use HITAG-AES SmartKey + SGW.

Ram-specific: HD 2500/3500 uses same SGW but with a different BCM firmware revision than light-duty 1500. The Ram ProMaster commercial van uses Fiat Ducato architecture with cluster-paired immobilizer requiring Fiat-specific tooling.

Common Ram models we service

  • Ram 1500 (2011-2026) — DT platform (2019+) HITAG-AES SmartKey + SGW. Limited adds display-key fob. TRX discontinued for 2025.
  • Ram 2500/3500 HD (2011-2026) — Heavy-duty diesel; DJ platform (2019+) HITAG-AES + SGW. Power Wagon/Laramie/Limited include proximity.
  • Ram ProMaster (2014-2026) — Commercial van; Fiat Ducato-based with cluster-paired immobilizer.
  • Ram ProMaster City (2015-2022) — Discontinued after 2022 MY.

Ram key replacement FAQ

How much does a Ram key replacement cost?

A 2015 Ram 1500 FOBIK spare runs $215-$295; a 2024 Ram 1500 Limited SmartKey spare runs $260-$365. All-keys-lost on 2018+ SGW lands $355-$480. ProMaster runs $245-$475.

Can a locksmith really program a Ram smart key?

Yes — 2018+ Ram trucks with HITAG-AES SmartKey + SGW can be programmed by AutoAuth-subscribed or NASTF VSP-credentialed locksmiths. Matching engine adds HD-specific firmware tier for 2500/3500.

What if I lost ALL my Ram keys?

All-keys-lost on 2018+ Ram with SGW is 60-90 min on-site for SGW-capable partner. Without AutoAuth or NASTF VSP credential, partner cannot reach immobilizer.

How long does Ram key programming take on-site?

Spare with working master: 25-40 min. All-keys-lost on 2018+ SGW: 60-90 min. HD trucks add ~10 min for firmware handshake.

Industry insight

Heavy-duty Ram is where partner experience really matters. The 2500/3500 platform has slightly different BCM firmware than the 1500, and the wrong tool revision will hang halfway through the AutoAuth handshake. We keep HD-capable partners flagged separately.
